The Androgynous vault is a blog (and sometimes vlog) about the lives of two androgynous girls in Brisbane. This blog offers a perspective of life through androgynous eyes.
Volume 3: Categories and Neatly Defined Boxes
Us jamming with The Mothership
Hello there, you may or may not have noticed yet that this blog has videos in it. Yes! Look, right down the bottom below this massive block of text theres a couple of links to some videos! Videos that pretty much explain everything I want to write about in this blog. Technically that means you don't even have to bother with the mundane task of exercising your eyes from left to right to read this. Also, you certainly won't have to worry about the always difficult task of communicating words on screen to meaning in brain.
WELL the rumors are true, however, if you DO decide to read this blog I feel it necessary to warn you that it may give you a headache. Sometimes this topic gives me a headache just thinking about it. In fact I have just woken up from a headache induced sleep that lasted three whole days (This figure may not be accurate, I exagerate sometimes). If you are still reading now, I congratulate you and welcome you to the wonderfully complex, headache inducing, yet incredibly facinating world of sex, gender and sexuality.
I watched two videos on youtube recently which I will post below and feel free to watch now or later. These videos discussed the usual topics surrounding sex, gender and sexuality. That would be: categories or nice, clear defined boxes and the very act of abandoning these clear cut definitions.
Lets think of the world androgyny. The way I would explain androgyny is 'being neither distinguishably masculine nor feminine either emotionally or physically or both'. If I were speaking to you readers right now in some kind of lecture presentation in real life, I would now ask you all whether you agree with this definition, in which case (and just for arguments sake) I would hope you would all say yes. Now, I am perfectly happy with this definition and I am perfectly happy to bestow this definition upon myself as who I am, what I am and how I want to be known.
BUT then I came across a video entitled "Androgyny - In/defined by redrhodent which threw me into a state of panic and confusion and yes, a succession of headache induced naps as I tried to interpret another view of androgyny.
The video starts with this quote:
"We live in a world of binaries. Black and white, day and night, yes or no, positive or negative, male or female, masculine or feminine. But what about the people that do not fit into black and white? What about the grey people? What about those people who are not masculine or feminine, who are either in the middle of indefinable? Is androgyny a sufficient concept to explain what or who they are?" - Redrhodent
GIRLS who are BOYS who like BOYS to be GIRLS (marybside)
From what I can understand, this video is trying to tell us all that the very act of slapping oursevles with the 'androgynous' label is the same as placing ourselves into a category which is essentially what androgyny is against. Can you see how this gives me a headache?
I don't claim to know anything much about this kind of stuff but it is interesting to see some deep thought into the subject. Please watch the videos and try to avoid headaches as you consider the many different perspectives of sex, gender and sexuality. Let me know what you think, discuss with others and think too much about it late at night. Just think about it, because (and yes I will go here) this quite possibly could be an interesting argument when thinking about human being evolution.
I leave you with a quote from the second video entitled GIRLS who are BOYS who like BOYS to be GIRLS by marybside. Which is also an article in FlawLes magazine.
"And when they ask why a nice girl like me would spit in the face of social norms I will tell them that I want to be who I am, not what I'm told. I will tell them that I deserve to be comfortable in my life and to make myself at home in my body. Lastly, I will tell them that I am me and I am okay". - Marybside, FlawLes magazine volume 4: the gender issue.
